Hey y'all! It’s your girl, BLovesLife, back again — and today, I’ve got a story that had me absolutely ROLLING with laughter. Y’all are not ready for this one! Let me tell you about the time my son Darius came clean about one of his little childhood adventures... turns out, he was a tiny fruit thief back in the day!
We were out in the yard the other day, just taking in the beautiful weather, when I pointed out this tree with these deep purple berries growing on it. I told Darius, “That’s a mulberry tree.” And that’s all it took — he started cracking up and launched right into this confession that I was NOT expecting... or maybe I was!
He told me about how, when he was little, he and his friend Ashley used to SNEAK into the neighbors’ yard just to steal mulberries off their tree! Y’all, I knew my child was up to something back then — you know mamas have that sixth sense — but hearing him admit it years later had me weak with laughter!
Of course, Darius tried to defend himself real quick, saying, “First of all, I was not bad!” Boy, please! He went on to explain that he and Ashley would tiptoe right into the neighbor’s yard, pick those berries straight off the tree, and snack like it was an all-you-can-eat buffet. One time, they even got caught! Darius said the neighbor caught them red-handed and hollered, “Boy, if you don’t get off that tree!” — y’all, I can just picture the whole scene in my mind!
But did that stop him? Nope! Those mulberries were just too good to resist. Darius and Ashley made it a whole mission every summer — sneaking back to that same tree, day after day, living their best lives eating up all the neighbors’ fruit! Honestly, at this point, I’m thinking those poor neighbors probably didn’t even bother trying to harvest any berries because Darius and his partner-in-crime were already handling it!
When we got to talking about what the mulberries actually looked like, Darius had me cracking up even more. He wasn’t even sure! He said, “I swear it looks like a blackberry,” and then admitted he only knew the word “mulberry” because Ashley told him that’s what it was. But you know how kids are — Ashley might’ve been making it up for all we know!
This boy had me in stitches when he said, “She said it’s a mulberry cherry tree. She said it’s a mulberry. But anyways, I don’t know what that is.” Lawd have mercy! And then, standing there looking at our trees now, he said, “It kind of looks like it’s giving Japanese.” I couldn’t do anything but laugh — only Darius would describe a tree that way!
And y’all, the cherry on top? I had to remind him that we actually paid good money to have these trees planted in our yard! Can you believe it? After all that sneaking and stealing growing up, now we’ve got our own mulberry trees, no trespassing necessary! Talk about coming full circle!
Have any of y’all ever caught your grown kids confessing to their childhood shenanigans out of nowhere? I swear, these moments are some of the sweetest (and funniest) parts of parenting. Drop your stories in the comments — I want to hear all about them!
