The Untold Story of My Four-Legged Friends

The Untold Story of My Four-Legged Friends

You asked me if I ever had pets, and I suddenly realized I’d never told you about the little companions who once walked beside me. These are memories I’ve kept close to my heart—not because I wanted to hide them, but simply because as we grow older, we often forget the things that once meant the world to us as children.

Ebony – The Little Midnight Cat
I still remember Ebony, my tiny black cat who looked like the night itself. The name might have sounded fancy for a child, but back then, I loved it. It felt special, just like she was. Ebony had sleek, soft fur and glowing eyes that shined in the dark. I used to sit and stroke her after school, listening to the gentle purring that filled our small room with peace.

Tiger – The Bold Little Kitten
Then there was Tiger, the striped kitten who looked just like a miniature tiger. I named him that because his coat truly resembled a wild cat in tiny form. Tiger was playful, mischievous, and endlessly curious. He would squeeze into every nook and cranny, from old shoeboxes to the narrow spaces beneath the bed.

There was a time I thought I had lost him forever. My family searched everywhere, calling his name from morning till night. I cried my heart out, fearing he had run away. But days later, we discovered him fast asleep at the foot of the bed, curled up in the folds of an old blanket. He had probably been there all along, snoozing away. When I finally held him again, I was both relieved and upset, but in the end, I just hugged him tightly and promised I’d never let him slip away again.

But one day, Tiger truly disappeared. He slipped out through the back door and never returned. I searched the neighborhood, calling his name for days. I must have been about eleven at the time, and losing Tiger felt like losing my best friend. I kept hoping he’d come back, but as the days turned into weeks, he never did.

Snoopy – A Short but Deep Friendship
Later, I had Snoopy. The name was familiar, just like the comic strip character I loved reading about. Snoopy wasn’t with me for long, but when he passed away, I cried as though my whole world had shattered. That was the first time I truly understood the pain of loss—the lesson that love alone isn’t always enough to keep someone with you forever.

Jeremiah – Shared with Mariah
Together with my sister Mariah, we cared for a dog named Jeremiah. Darius used to joke that she named him after her younger brother, but in truth, she had chosen the name from the Bible. Jeremiah was gentle and friendly, always bounding around us with joy whenever we came home.

The Lessons of Love and Loss
Looking back, I realize my childhood was colored by these precious friendships. As children, we don’t fully grasp time or the meaning of loss—we only know how to love deeply and believe that things will always stay the same. Those little cats and dogs taught me about unconditional love, about loyalty, and also about the heartbreak of letting go.

I still remember searching for Tiger in the back alley, calling his name with all the hope I had left. I remember the grief when Snoopy died, and how I sobbed in my mother’s arms. These memories shaped the way I cherish and value every relationship in my life today.

So when Darius asked me why we’ve never had pets, I realized it might be because the pain of those goodbyes still lingers. Yet I also know nothing could ever replace the joy and love those little four-legged friends brought me. They taught me that true love is never afraid of loss—it only fears not being fully given while there is still time.
