What is Nate doing to my hair?

Hey y’all! Today I’ve got a special video to share with you. After all these years, I finally convinced my husband, Nate, to help me dye my hair at home! Yep, you heard that right — and let me tell you, it turned into one hilarious adventure!

The Beginning of It All

First things first, Nate is not a professional hairstylist. He’s not a cosmetologist, not a barber — just a husband trying to help his wife out. But to be fair, he’s actually cut my hair before! He learned a few tricks from his mom, who once dreamed of becoming a hairstylist when she was younger.

For today’s session, we used Dark and Lovely Fade Resistant in Jet Black. This was Nate’s first time being fully involved in the dyeing process, so I was both nervous and excited!

Getting Ready – Not as Easy as It Sounds!

Before we started, Nate put on the “apron” I gave him for Father’s Day — except it wasn’t really an apron. It was one of those beard-shaving bibs with suction cups that stick to the mirror and catch hair. Super practical! I just wish they made something like that for women, because hair gets everywhere!

While reading the instructions, we discovered that the processing time depends on hair type: 30 minutes for natural hair, 20 minutes for relaxed hair. Lucky for me, my hair is natural, so we went with the full 30 minutes.

Mixing the Dye – The First Challenge

On paper, it sounds easy: mix two bottles, shake well, and apply. But in reality? Nate’s very first struggle was with the gloves! The ones in the box were way too small for his big hands — one even ripped. I couldn’t stop laughing watching him try to squeeze into them!

Once we finally got that sorted, we mixed the dye. The instructions said to section the hair into four parts, but Nate decided to “freestyle” — his goal was simply to make sure it was evenly coated.

Applying the Dye – Comedy in Action

When it came time to apply the color, Nate asked me, “Should I start in the front, the back, or the middle?” According to the box, you should start from the back and move forward — probably because that’s the hardest part, like testing a spot on a carpet before cleaning the whole thing!

I told him to focus on my grays in the front — top priority! He also wondered if he should use Vaseline or Pink Oil around my scalp for protection, but we ended up skipping that step.

Here’s where it got funny: instead of carefully parting my hair into sections, Nate just applied the dye all over and massaged it in like he was shampooing. His logic? “That way I know it’s getting everywhere.” Honestly… it made sense!

Waiting Game

After we were done, we realized we had spent a good 5–14 minutes just getting started — and we forgot to set a timer! So we decided to wait an extra 20 minutes to be safe.

While waiting, I told Nate that gray hair is harder to color. My hairstylist usually pre-treats those areas before applying dye, but today we were just crossing our fingers!

After a while, I started feeling the dye heat up on my scalp — totally normal, but definitely a weird sensation!

Rinsing – The Most Crucial Part

After 30 minutes, it was time to rinse. Nate made sure the water was warm — my kind of warm, not his — and started washing it out. Thankfully, it came out easily and didn’t stain my skin too much.

Then we used the conditioner that came in the box. Nate reminded me of something he learned: warm water opens up your pores so the conditioner can penetrate, then cold water seals everything in. Science, baby! He joked that his mom didn’t care about “science” — she just got it done!

I was so happy to see that my hair didn’t shed at all, and that conditioner smelled amazing.

The Results

After rinsing with cold water (and Nate trying — and failing — to surprise me with how cold it was), we were done! My hair came out soft, curly, and shiny.

I’m really thankful for Nate. He might not be a pro, but he did his best — and honestly, it turned out great! Still, I’m planning to visit a salon soon to get it styled professionally — it’s been years since I’ve done that!

Final Thoughts

This was such a fun and memorable experience. If you ever plan to have your loved one help you dye your hair, remember these tips:

  • Read the instructions (even if your husband says you don’t need to!)

  • Get gloves that actually fit

  • Set a timer from the start

  • And most importantly — laugh through it all!

Thanks so much for watching, y’all! I’ll see you in the next video when I head to the salon!
Peace out! ✌️
