I Ran Out of the Kitchen Because of This Dish But Grandma Still Made Me Eat It!

Y’all, can I take you on a little trip down memory lane for a second? Because this one right here brought me all the way back to my childhood — and not in the way you’d expect. The other day I was cleaning a chicken, and when I saw that piece of liver hiding inside, baby… I froze. My mind went straight to my grandma’s kitchen like I was 8 years old all over again.

Now listen, growing up, we didn’t have takeout or drive-thrus all the time. When something was cookin’ in the house, it meant somebody was throwing down in the kitchen. So when you caught a whiff of something sizzling, you knew it was about to be good — maybe BBQ ribs, maybe fried chicken, maybe pork chops. My little self would come running, mouth watering, expecting a full plate of deliciousness.

But then… BAM. You get to the stove, lift that lid, and it’s liver with o*nions. 😩 Baby, my heart would drop. I could NOT stand the smell. I’d gag before I even saw the plate. But grandma? Oh, she was determined. “Baby, just try it. Grandma made it special. You ain’t even tasted it yet!” And I’d be like, “Yes, ma’am… but no ma’am.” 😂

And it didn’t stop there. Nope. Next came the chtlins. They’d try everything to convince me:
“These ain’t like other people’s.”
“I cleaned them right — baking soda, vinegar, three times washed!”
“You won’t even taste the smell.”

But listen… I don’t care if you steam-cleaned those things with holy water and prayed over them — I’m NOT eating pig intestines! 🤣 I don’t care how tender, seasoned, or special they are. My answer is and always will be: no thank you!

Now here’s the kicker — I recently read that organ meats are actually some of the most nutrient-rich foods out there. Packed with vitamins, min*erals, and all kinds of stuff your body needs. They say it’s the superfood of traditional diets. And maybe they’re right. Maybe there’s power in those dishes. Maybe grandma was onto something.

But guess what? Even with all that knowledge… I still can’t do it. That liver in my chicken? Had to go. Immediately. 😂

Still, I can’t lie — these memories mean something to me now. Back then, I didn’t understand. I just thought grandma was making me suffer! But looking back, I realize those meals, those smells, even those dishes I couldn’t stand — they were all wrapped in love. Pure, unconditional love from a woman who just wanted to nourish her family the best way she knew how.

That’s why today, even if I’m still picky about certain foods, I cherish those memories with all my heart. Because it wasn’t really about what was on the plate… it was about who was serving it.
