Illness Can Strike Anytime, Even in Your 20s or 30s

Illness Can Strike Anytime, Even in Your 20s or 30s

Darius recently opened up about something that’s been weighing heavily on his mind—his health. He admitted that he’s been thinking a lot about how fragile life really is. For years, we’ve been living what feels like healthy, normal lives, but as he put it, “no one knows what tomorrow might bring.” His words hit me in a way I didn’t expect, because they carried both fear and truth.

Then he brought up Zaddy, his older brother, as an example. At just 26 years old, Zaddy suddenly developed vertigo. One day he was fine, living life as usual, and the next, everything changed. Before then, there had been no symptoms, no warning signs—just a sudden shift that no one could have predicted. Darius said that moment left a deep mark on him because it made him realize how quickly life can turn.

When he mentioned it, I asked him to make sure: “Wait, are you talking about vertigo?” because I couldn’t recall the exact term right away. Once he confirmed it, we sat for a while, just thinking about how unpredictable health can be. So many young people, full of energy and dreams, suddenly face illnesses that come out of nowhere. It’s something you never really expect until it hits close to home.

Darius also shared something that had really shaken him earlier that morning. He had been scrolling through TikTok and came across a video that had gone viral. It was about a 30-year-old woman battling colon cancer. In her video, she warned others that the disease is becoming a “pandemic” among people under 30. She spoke with urgency, trying to get others to take their health seriously. Hearing her story made Darius stop in his tracks. He told me it left him unsettled, thinking about his own life, his own body, and whether he’s doing enough to protect himself.

I listened carefully and then reminded him of something important. I told Darius that while it’s good to be mindful of our health, we can’t let fear take over our lives. Worrying constantly about what might happen doesn’t protect us—it only robs us of the peace we have right now. I reminded him that life is full of contradictions: some people take perfect care of themselves and still face serious illness, while others with reckless habits somehow live long lives. It’s not always about what we can or cannot control. Sometimes it’s genetics, sometimes it’s environment, sometimes it’s simply life being unpredictable.

What we can do, however, is take care of ourselves the best way we know how, while still living with joy. Eating well, moving our bodies, managing stress—these are things within our power. But just as importantly, we have to protect our peace of mind. Because good health is not just about the body—it’s also about the spirit.

At the end of our conversation, I looked at Darius and said, “Don’t let the fear of illness steal the life you’re still blessed to live.” He nodded, and I could tell he understood. It was a reminder we both needed that day: health is precious, but so is peace. And if we can hold on to both, we give ourselves the best chance at a life that is not only long, but meaningful.
