The Search Wasn’t Easy
Hey everyone! Today I want to share with you my journey of finding and enjoying a massive 10-pound King Crab. And let me tell y’all – it took me forever to find this!
Finding a 10-pound King Crab is no joke. I called so many places, and almost every answer I got was the same: out of stock, can’t find it, or not in season. Everyone kept telling me, “They’re out of season.” It was really tough, especially since these crabs are becoming harder and harder to find.
Deciding to Buy Live Crab Online
After all that effort, I finally found a company that sells live crabs online. It was my first time ordering from them, and honestly, I was nervous. You know how it is – when you spend around $8.75 (it started at about $6, but after tax and shipping, it came out to that), you can’t help but ask yourself: Is this going to work out for me? Did I make the right decision?
But I’ve got to say – it was one of the best decisions ever! The company did not disappoint. My order arrived perfectly fresh – no strange smell, no spoilage, just beautiful, clean crab meat ready to cook.
Why Choose Live Crab?
The Difference Between Fresh and Frozen Crab
After this experience, I realized there’s a huge difference between fresh live crab and the pre-cooked frozen kind we usually buy. Let me tell you – it’s like night and day!
Fresh Crab:
-
Incredibly tender and naturally sweet
-
Comes out of the shell easily – like butter, baby, like butter!
-
Rich, full flavor
-
Unbeatable freshness
Frozen Crab:
-
Already cooked and frozen
-
Loses that natural freshness
-
Less sweet
-
The meat isn’t as soft or juicy
When I cracked open that fresh crab, y’all, the meat just slid out of the shell. That’s when you know it’s truly fresh. I didn’t even need scissors that day!
A Special Type – North Wood or Norwegian King Crab
I believe this one was a special kind – maybe North Wood or Norwegian (sorry, I can’t remember the exact name). But what I do know is that this crab was much sweeter than the usual King Crab. It’s more sweeter than normal – and I could taste that difference in every bite!
How to Tell if a Crab Is Fresh
From my experience, here are a few things you should look out for:
-
Smell: Fresh crab doesn’t have a strong fishy odor. If it smells too fishy or odd – don’t eat it! That’s a sign it’s gone bad.
-
Texture: The meat should be firm, white, and easy to remove. If it’s mushy or clumpy, it’s not fresh.
-
Temperature: Crab tastes best when it’s hot. In my video, I kept saying “it’s still hot y’all!” – because that’s when it’s the most delicious.
-
Beware of rancid crab: Sometimes you might get seafood that’s gone bad – rancid. I’ve never had that happen with crab, but I did once with lobster tails. If that happens, don’t eat it!
Which Part of the Crab Is the Best?
Most parts of the King Crab are delicious, but there’s one part I personally don’t enjoy – the “toenail.” That’s just me though!
Now the crab roe – oh my goodness, that’s heaven! These eggs are so good – sweet, rich, and buttery. You’ve got to try it at least once!
Why King Crabs Are Getting Harder to Find
During my search, I learned that King Crabs are becoming scarce – maybe even close to extinction. That’s why it’s so hard to find big ones like this 10-pounder. Buying them in season is key because off-season, suppliers struggle to find quality stock. That’s one of the reasons it took me so long to track mine down.
Lessons From My Experience
Here’s what I’ve learned from this adventure:
-
Don’t be afraid to buy live crab. It might cost more and require cooking, but the taste difference is absolutely worth it. I need to buy my crabs fresh all the time!
-
Do your research before buying. When ordering seafood online, especially from a new company, always read reviews and check their background. I got lucky this time!
-
Pay for quality. $8.75 for a 10-pound crab might sound expensive, but it’s worth it, it’s way worth it! For a crab lover like me, that’s money well spent.
-
Eat it while it’s hot. The flavor of fresh, steaming-hot crab is unmatched!
Final Thoughts
After all the searching, worrying, and waiting, I can proudly say: “My stuff was fresh, it wasn’t rancid!” That company truly delivered, and I’ll definitely order from them again.
I even named my crab Curtis Senor – and he gave me one of the best meals I’ve ever had! If you’re a seafood lover like me, try live King Crab at least once. You’ll understand exactly why I’m so excited about it!
And remember – when buying seafood, especially King Crab, always choose a trusted source, check for freshness, and enjoy it hot for the best experience ever!
