Every time I bring up home security, Darius acts like I’m over the top. He’ll look at me and say, “Mom, do you really think somebody’s gonna bring a ladder, climb to the balcony, and break in?” And I’m sitting there thinking—yes, maybe not exactly like that, but why do you keep brushing it off like I’m just imagining things? I’m not asking if it could happen, I’m asking when.
Then he takes it to a whole new level of sarcasm. He’ll say stuff like, “Sure, let’s put cameras on the roof, because people are probably parachuting from the sky and sliding down the chimney.” And I’m like, “Really, Darius? Nobody’s skydiving into our house.” But he comes right back with, “You’ve never lived in the hood.” At that point, I honestly don’t even know where the conversation is going.

Here’s the thing—there are people out here pulling off break-ins that look like scenes straight out of Mission Impossible. I’ve seen it, I’ve read about it. Darius, on the other hand, keeps things simple. In his mind, the worst-case scenario is just someone noticing an unlocked door and strolling right in.
Of course, I understand the basics—locking the doors, having doorbell cameras, maybe even extra lighting outside. But the way Darius sees it, “Nobody is coming in this house!” And then when I mention cameras in unusual places, he rolls his eyes and says, “Mom, you don’t need a chimney cam—Santa Claus isn’t real.”
The truth is, I think he’s caught between extremes. Either he’s being overly dismissive, or he’s too wired from watching one too many crazy videos online. And let me tell you, those videos can really mess with your perspective. You see people acting wild, police encounters gone wrong, all kinds of madness. And I’m just left wondering—how did he even end up on that corner of the internet in the first place?
Because at the end of the day, I’m not trying to be dramatic. I’m just trying to be prepared. And maybe, just maybe, being “paranoid” is what keeps you safe before something actually happens.
