Hi everyone! Today I want to share with you some of the “legendary” moments from my son Darius’s school years. Trust me, these stories will have you laughing until you cry!
The No.1 “Tattletail”
First of all, I have to admit one thing: Darius was the sweetest kid in the world – but also the No.1 “tattletail”!
I remember so clearly the time my husband and I had to meet his 1st-grade teacher. She said: “He’s a wonderful person, such a delight to have in class, everybody loves Darius, but…” – and I already knew something was coming – “one thing we have a complaint about: he tells everything, he tells on everybody!”
This boy, I’m telling you, if anyone did something wrong, he would report it right away! The teacher even had to say: “Some things are not meant to be said or told.”
But Darius replied, “Well if they were doing bad things, they need to be reprimanded!” Five, six, seven years old and already talking like a lawyer! I could only say, “Okay Darius, we understand…”

The Legendary Eraser Throw
Then came the famous “eraser throw” incident! This was the one – and ONLY – time Darius ever got detention. And the way he handled it was… classic Darius!
Here’s what happened: he was in 6th grade, during study hall. A friend named Sam threw a pencil at him, so he threw an eraser back. But his aim was so bad, the eraser rolled right under the teacher’s desk!
The teacher asked, “Who threw this?” and my innocent boy stood up and admitted, “Oh, it was me!” He thought it was just study hall, nothing serious.
But that day, the teacher seemed to be having a bad day. Maybe her marriage was o-n t-h-e r-o-c-k-s or something happened with her kids – anyway, she decided to give him an “Extra Learning Opportunity” (ELO) – which is just a fancy name for detention!
The Emergency Call
And guess who he called? HIS DAD! Not me!
Darius said, “I called Dad and not you because I knew you were going to go off. You would have been up at that school pulling me out of that class.”
And his dad just said calmly, “Okay, see you at home.”
I have to admit, he knew me too well! If he had called me back then, I probably would have pulled the plug right there! 😂
The Struggle at a New School
Later, Darius attended a new school in Mason, Ohio – a very prestigious place. He was in 12th grade, but struggled with honors math.
“The learning curve is different,” he explained. Back in Wisconsin he could handle honors, but this school’s level was something else. “This was a nice school, very academically good,” he said.
And then one day, I got a call from his math teacher…
The “Shocking” Phone Call
Picture this: I’m at the gym, working out. The phone rings, and the teacher tells me my son is failing math. I lost it!
“YOU NEED TO DO YOUR MATH HOMEWORK!” – I shouted over the phone, forgetting I was in public.
Darius said later, “I was so focused talking to you, this guy was waiting for the machine and he literally yells at me: ‘GET OFF THE PHONE IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE ON THE MACHINE!’”
My son had to tell me, “Mom, you’re doing too much right now!” and got off the equipment out of embarrassment.
Looking back, Darius thinks maybe that guy was rac-ially motivated. “My eyes are open now, I got a third eye open now that I’m older.” 😅
Life Lesson
Through all these moments, I realized Darius has always been a survivor. Whether it was being the “tattletail” or struggling with math at a new school, he always found a way to adapt.
In the end, we switched him to a regular math class. And guess what? “Of course you did,” I told him, “in this class you ate it up!”
A Feature in the School Paper
I still remember when he was featured in the school paper as a YouTuber. “Sensational” – that’s what they called him! I still keep that newspaper somewhere in a box.
There was some drama around it, but Darius never told me the full story. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry,” he said. Smart kid!
Final Thoughts
Looking back at Darius’s school years, I’m so proud of how he’s grown. From an innocent “tattletail” to a young man who can handle stress and adapt to new situations.
Even though he’s got 51% of his genes from his dad, that dramatic storytelling style is definitely from me! 😂
Now he’s grown up and getting ready to move to Chicago. These school stories will always be some of our fondest memories.
