A Special Journey: When I Helped My Soul Sister Reunite with Her Daughter After Over 20 Years

Thinking back to a few months ago, there was one early morning I’ll never forget. Around 6 or 7 AM, I woke up to some unexpected news — an emergency trip to Chicago that I only found out about the night before. This wasn’t a planned getaway. It was one of those rare moments in life that calls for immediate action.

The Journey Begins
Mariah — my soul sister and longtime friend from Columbus — had spent the night at my house. We were headed to Chicago for something incredibly personal: she was going to see her daughter, whom she hadn’t laid eyes on in over 20 years. From the moment she shared that with me, I knew this trip would change her life forever.

I made the decision to document everything — not for content’s sake, but because I felt the depth of this moment. On the road, I could hear the mix of nervousness and excitement in Mariah’s voice. This was more than just a road trip.

Arriving in Chicago – A City Full of Memories
Once we got to Chicago, I had to quickly learn how to feed and take care of a baby — yes, that was part of the plan. It was preparation for bringing the little one home. We strolled around near the University of Chicago — a place I’ve always loved. While out looking for food, I randomly met a sweet girl named Jade, who sells fresh juice and has a YouTube channel called “Juicing with Jade.” It was one of those unexpected but joyful encounters, and of course I had to tell my people about her.

A Reunion to Remember
The most emotional part of the trip came when we arrived at the hospital. I even ran into Nene — a 25-year-old I used to care for when she was just a little girl. Seeing her all grown up made me feel a lil’ old, I won’t lie!

Then… it happened. Naomi appeared. I still can’t get over the glow on Mariah’s face when she saw her daughter again for the first time in over two decades. That kind of joy — it’s p-u-r-e and powerful. Naomi was absolutely beautiful, and after the wave of emotions settled, she peacefully fell asleep in her mother’s arms. Y’all… I had to hold back my own tears.

A Taste of Chicago
After that unforgettable moment, we decided to get something to eat. We first thought about trying Uncle Jay’s Barbecue, but ended up going back to I-57 Rib House — one of my go-to spots in Chicago with that unforgettable sauce! And yes, we also stopped by Jerk 48 to get some jerk chicken. I won’t lie — we went a little overboard with the food, but hey… it was a celebration!

Chicago always has a place in my heart when it comes to food — though I have no plans to move back!

Reflections on This Journey
Looking back, I realize I was blessed to witness one of life’s most beautiful moments — a mother and daughter reuniting after years apart. Being there for Mariah during this life-changing experience wasn’t just a personal memory… it was a reminder of how powerful love, forgiveness, and family truly are.

I know Mariah and Naomi’s story is just beginning, and I’m so honored I got to be there for that very first chapter. That’s why I always love sharing real stories, real emotions, and real life. Because moments like this — they matter.

That was a special journey I’ll carry in my heart forever. I hope this story reminds you of the healing power of love and reunion.
