The Strange Hairstyle That Made My Son Laugh Out Loud

The Strange Hairstyle That Made My Son Laugh Out Loud

Today I tied my hair in a pretty unique way – one side hanging down and the other resting gently on my shoulder. I call it “a little rest on the shoulder.” Darius keeps telling me I sound silly when I describe it that way, but honestly, I think it’s the perfect way to explain this hairstyle.

When I tried to explain the “antennas” sticking up on top of my head, Darius laughed at me, but I thought it looked kind of dreamy. To me, it gave off a sense of “poetic justice.”

What People Say About My Hair
Darius went into full detail analyzing my hairstyle. He said I looked like:

  • Workout resistance bands

  • A crustacean, like a lobster tail

  • Ancient Roman style – like a toga with grapes and wine

  • The Jesus era (I joked, like 150 years ago)

He was also concerned about the back of my head, saying it looked like I had no hair from behind. But I explained that this is exactly how I tie my hair when I go swimming – so the water won’t touch it.

The Reason Behind the Hairstyle
The truth is, I was getting ready to go swimming, and this hairstyle was just my way of protecting my hair from the water. Then I thought, “Why not try stepping out like this and see how it feels?”

I’ll admit though, my hair is a little botched right now – that’s why I wear a durag. Plus, I’ve got some gray strands right in the front that are hard to hide.

About the Durag and Personal Style
When Darius mocked my little “antenna” style, I fired back saying it was my “banji bambi” look – a mix between “banji” (meaning hood) and “bambi” (like the little deer from the cartoon).

It reminded me of back in the day when wearing a durag was actually considered a fashion statement. People used to rock them in red, black, all kinds of colors, not just for hair protection but as an accessory.

Future Hair Plans
Darius has plans to grow out the front of his hair – he wants long dreadlocks. And I straight-up told him: “Darius, I hope not!” I already think he looked funny with those two little pieces of hair hanging on the sides, I can’t even imagine what it would look like if they were longer.

He also mentioned trying to use my flat iron to curl his hair, but it ended up burning it. He said he smelled the burn and stopped. I had to explain – if you want curls, you need wet hair and rollers, not a flat iron.

Thoughts on Beauty and Style
Even though Darius had his laughs, I personally think my hairstyle today looked pretty cute. When he said I looked like I had antlers, I clapped back saying, “Well, then I’m the fiercest reindeer you’ve ever seen.”

I’ll even take the Ariana Grande comparison – a little glamorous, a little feminine.

Confidence and Self-Acceptance
Even if this hairstyle looks unusual to some people, I still feel comfortable and confident in it. I’m not afraid to try new styles, even if my son teases me.

At the end of the day, what matters most is that I feel good about myself. I’m not afraid to express my personal style – whether it’s “banji bambi” or anything else I feel like rocking.
